NFL Fantasy Football Week 9 Start Em or Sit Em; Forte, Jacobs, Orton

2 November 2009 6 Comments

Another crazy week of fantasy football is in the books.  Last weeks insanity included the fact that Joseph Addai threw for more touchdowns than Peyton Manning….  Ryan Moats has 3 TD’s….  Kurt Warner completes 5 passes to Panthers…  T.O. equals TD?

What does Week 9 have in store?  First, the following teams are on a Bye:  Bills, Browns, Vikings, Jets, Raiders and Rams.

These teams on a Bye are by and large great for my weekly readers.  I have an offensive starting ban on the Browns, Bills and Raiders which still has not been lifted, but will not affect you as they can’t play anyways.

Week 9 Positional Breakdown

Quarter Backs

Kyle Orton-Broncos  Sit Em- Kyle Orton and the Broncos offense had a huge reality check last week in their first loss of the season facing the Baltimore Ravens.  Orton finished with 141 yards passing with no TD’s or INT’s.  This week the Broncos face the Steelers.  The Steelers are fresh off of a Bye week, right after an enormous win over the at the time undefeated Minnesota Vikings.  Orton’s stats should be similar, but add a few turnovers in his stats total.

Eli Manning-Giants  Start Em- Eli is coming off of two poor fantasy football weeks to his own standards which he set earlier in the year.  Playing the Chargers this week should realign the stars for Manning and Co.  The Chargers gave up 16 points to an Oakland team that could not score on some college teams.

Matt Hasselbeck-Seahawks  Start Em- Last time I recommended starting Hasselbeck, he burned me, and the rest of the fantasy world.  But opposite of Hasselbeck is the Detroit Lions, and every time I recommended starting someone against the Lions, they exploded.  Don’t believe me, just look at my advise when I said to start Santana Moss and Jason Campbell.  This was their most notable games of the year.  Hasselbeck is coming off an average performance against the Cowboys, who are leaps and bounds defensively above the Lions.

There are obvious starts which I do not spend time on because I am giving you the credit you deserve to know that Donavan McNabb, Peyton Manning, Arron Rodgers, Tom Brady and on and on are all must starts.  I will tell you, as I said that Vince Young would be starting, and productive, look for Jake Delhomme and his under 100 passing yard performance to place him in a back up role soon.  If this does not happen, John Fox may be digging his own coaching grave in Carolina.

Running Backs

Matt Forte-Bears  Sit Em- I think the Bears miss Cedric Benson! Forte had 25 carries against the Browns last week and still could not produce a 100 yard game.  He did get two scores, but his longest run was 12 yards.  Forte was without question a start versus the Browns, as every offensive player in the league with the exception of Raiders and Bills should be, but Forte will be facing a pissed off Cardinals team that was the #1 rush defense prior to getting gashed by the Panthers.

Houston Texans Running Backs  Sit Em- If you have Steve Slaton, you are bent, rightfully so, that he was benched for his inability to hold onto the football.  You are even more bent that back up Ryan Moats had 120 plus yards and three touchdowns.  Facing the Colts, who did a good job on Frank Gore last week with the exception of a few runs, I can see Moats starting and not having any success at all.  I can then see the Texans turning towards Slaton for help, which he will not provide either.  Until Moats runs wild against a real defense, and Slaton’s length of time in the dog house is determined, I avoid both of these backs.

Brandon Jacobs- Giants  Start Em- If you own Brandon Jacobs, you are thinking to yourself, should I listen to him?  I would be skeptical too.  Jacobs continues to get 20 plus carries a game, and gets close to 100 yards per game… He just is not finding the endzone.  Fear not Jacobs owners, if Justin Fargas could find pay dirt against the Chargers, how can they stop Jacobs?

Wide Receivers

Tennessee Titans Receivers- Sit Em- Vince Young and…  Sorry, Chris Johnson and Co. carried the Titans to an impressive win over the Jaguars last week.  Young did not look bad, but he did not find his receivers too often.  I don’t look for this to improve against the 49ers defense this week either.

Seattle Seahawks Receivers- Start Em- If you are an owner of the Seahawks big 3, Nate Burleson, Dieon Branch or T.J. Houshmandzadeh, if there is ever a week to start them, this is the week.  Seattle can’t run the ball with anyone, against anyone!  The Seahawks will have to pass the ball to win, and that they will do.

Vincent Jackson-Chargers  Start Em- Jackson has been on a tear, and Philip Rivers is not going to stop passing any time soon.  Jackson has went over 100 yards 4 games this year, and has a TD in 6 games on the year.  The Giants had no problem letting McNabb light them up last week, so Jackson’s success should continue.

Tight Ends

Vernon Davis-49ers  Start Em- For the rest of the year!  If Davis is on your roster, from this day forward, he is a must start!  Last week when scoring points were at a premium against the Colts, Davis got the job done.  With 7 TD’s on the season, Davis has become the second best option on the team behind Frank Gore.

Brent Celek-Eagles  Start Em- Donavan McNabb must read what I write.  After stating that McNabb needs an invite to throw to his tight ends, or that they are his fifth and sixth option on the field behind the water boy, he and Celek connect 4 times for 61 yards and a touchdown.  Celek only has 3 TD’s on the season, and two weeks ago against the Redskins had 3 grabs for only 8 yards.  Hopefully for Celek owners, the Giants game is a sign of things to come.

Kellen Winslow-Buccaneers  Sit Em- Aside from a monster game against the Eagles after the QB switch from Byron Leftwich to Josh Johnson, Winslow has been a non factor in his last two games.  If Johnson’s performance continues to be horrible, or if rookie Josh Freeman has picked up enough of the offense and is ready to go, Winslow’s fantasy numbers will still be miserable until someone figures out how to get him the ball.  I still can’t figure out the benching of Leftwich!

Defenses

Start Em-  Steelers, Packers, Falcons, Saints, Patriots.

Sit Em-  Broncos, Cowboys, Titans, Dolphins, Panthers

    Kurt,
3 pt lead going into monday night game. Micheal turner for me and brees for my opponent. Do I stand a chance?

    Hey little brother…

If Atlanta’s defense continues to be a passing play ground for opponents, and the Falcons do not commit to Turner… You do not stand a chance in hell. If the old Michael Turner shows up and the Saints decide running is a good idea, or they leave Drew Brees at the airport, you’re good!

You can always hope for a Chris Johnson day, like I had.

If I had to pick… Stick a fork in ya, you are done!

I would still watch and scream at the TV though!

Maroney or Brown – Help please !

  • Fraschetti (author) said:

    Hi Chuck,

That is the most difficult question I can remember this season for several reasons.

    1. Bill B never commits to Maroney.
    2. Ronnie Brown is coming off of his only bad game of the year.
    3. The Patriots will be looking to shut Brown down since he embarrassed them with the wildcat last year, and they are not afraid of Henne and the pass game.

The player with the most potential is Maroney. He also has the biggest chance of failure. If the Pats abort the run all together, as they have done so many times before, Maroney is screwed.

If you need consistency from this position go Brown, who will get more touches. To be honest, Maroney has burned me countless times in the last 3 years that I would only go to him in this offense if I had no other option.

    Hope this helps…
