NFC PLAYOFFS REVOLVE AROUND NFC EAST
With the Packers win on Monday night over Baltimore, Green Bay all but wrapped up a wild card berth in the NFC. Their remaining schedule sports only one winning team and with 8 wins already they will be hard to keep out of the mix. That leaves 3 teams contending for 2 spots, and they all reside in the NFC East division.
The Cowboys have the toughest road, after their loss to the Giants gave them a 2-2 division record, they must face San Diego, New Orleans, Washington, and Philadelphia. They do not own any tie-breakers over the Giants. They must also face the team in the Eagles that knocked them out of the playoffs last year on the last day of the season.
The Eagles and Giants control their own destiny, and that destiny collides Sunday night in the Meadowlands. The Eagles are getting healthier and that is scary. They are a team of multiple weapons on offense and an opportunistic defense that can change a game in an instant. They have become a big play team. They take multiple chances on defense, leaving their corners alone on receivers allowing them to blitz relentlessly. DeSean Jackson has developed into a game changing receiver and kick returner. They are a very dangerous team when McNabb is on his game and Westbrook is healthy.
The Giants will attempt to do what they did against Dallas. STOP THE RUN. That is always the key for the Giants defense. Even though Donovan is an elite QB, and he can beat you with his arm and with his legs, stopping the running game of the Eagles helps the Giants keep the rest of the offense in front of them. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was asked how they would contain Brent Celek the talented tight end for the Eagles since Jason Witten had such a great game against them on Sunday. His answer, in typical coach speak, was that Witten had a good game in some areas. What that translates into is that the Giants are happy to give up short passes, as long as they rally to the ball and don’t give up yards after the catch. When a team has deep threats and game changing performers on the outside, you have to be happy giving up short passes underneath and forcing as many third down opportunities as possible. Third downs create opportunities for pressure, and a slip in accuracy gets the defense off the field.
The Giants can afford to lose this game now that they put Dallas in a hole last week, especially if the Cowboys lose earlier in the day to the high-flying Chargers. The Giants-Eagles rivalry is one of streaks, and the Eagles have beaten the Giants in the last 3 meetings. This should help the intensity of Sunday nights game in the Meadowlands, not that this division rivalry needs any help.
